Poppy and her five brothers and sisters were rescued from a farmer who kept pigs in concrete cells with nothing whatsoever to do. Poppy had a lucky escape – she would have been ‘fattened’ and killed at six months old.

At Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary, she is safe, settling in well and will have a home and freedom for life. Poppy loves a good back rub and you’re likely to find her rubbing her back against tree trunks, fence posts and your legs! Poppy would be so happy if you were to adopt her.

About Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary

Dean Farm Trust is a local charity with an animal sanctuary just outside of Chepstow. Rescued animals including miniature Shetland ponies, Exmoor ponies, donkeys, pigs, sheep and ex-battery hens are all given a home for life. Like us, Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary believes that all humans and animals are entitled to live a life free from pain and suffering. The seed for Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary was planted in 2004 when founder Mary Frankland researched how animals are brutally used in everyday society and how they are subject to abuse, cruelty and neglect.

Inspired by a number of other charities, and in particular by reading The Silent Ark by Viva!’s Juliet Gellatley and Tony Wardle, her aim was to set up a small sanctuary and campaign to help reduce animal suffering while spreading the message of compassionate living. They help people make cruelty free choices wherever possible as we all have the ability to make informed choices which will improve health, prevent cruelty and protect the environment.

Dean Farm Trust is an organisation that believes in life, compassion and empowerment: all factors that contribute to a sustainable, healthy and cruelty free planet. She has to raise over £1,500 to provide food, veterinary care and the amenities each animal needs.

The sanctuary’s work also includes education by providing information on the exploitation of animals in factory farming, intensive breeding and cruel sports.

Pig Rescue

Viva! and Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary’s first joint rescue was a monumental one!

Together, Viva! and Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary have rescued a sow and all six of her piglets from a pig farm going out of business. All were being sent to slaughter. We are so delighted that we can offer them a life together in the beautiful Welsh countryside! Not only that, these pig ambassadors will help us educate people about the horrors of factory farming by juxtaposing their new lives with our shocking footage from Britain's factory farms.

Juliet Gellatley, Founder and Director of Viva!, explains why this rescue means so much to her:

"When I was doing the filming for the Face Off campaign, I saw so much cruelty and neglect. One of the overriding feelings I came away with was that I felt terrible that I couldn't rescue them all. But I was determined to find a way of rescuing at least some pigs. I hope this mother and her babies can represent the millions of their brothers and sisters that are still on factory farms. Hopefully through seeing them, and how wonderful they are, people will give up meat. Because, of course, the only way to truly rescue animals is to stop eating them."

Our lucky sow and piglets have been flourishing since they first arrived at the sanctuary at the beginning of February. They are all healthy, happy and have adjusted brilliantly to their new surroundings. The family have been enjoying the fresh air, running around in the paddock and digging in the mud! Mum was thrilled to have a chance to stretch her legs and walk properly over grasslands for the first time in her three year life. She wagged her tail and watched her babies chase each other around the grass, always being watchful of them. It was truly joyous to see her root for the first time, delightfully thrusting back mud with her snout. Dean Farm will be giving Hope and her babies several acres of woodland to roam soon – their natural home.

However, so that this family can continue to enjoy the freedom granted by Viva! and Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary, they need your help. Please consider donating, or adopting one of the animals for just £25 a year. Half of your donation will feed and care for your chosen adoptee and the other half will go to Viva! to help save millions more lives – animal and human – through campaigns against factory farming.
